Large sharks exhibit varying behavioral responses to major hurricanes

چکیده

Under global climate change, storm events are predicted to increase in strength and frequency. Although aquatic animals can be affected by acute natural disturbances, information on the immediate consequences of these weather systems behavioral ecology highly mobile predators remains limited. Here we examine spatial distributions, activity spaces, ecological change-points four large shark species (mean: 193 cm fork length ± 70 SD) via passive acoustic telemetry two different locations subtropical Atlantic (Little Bahama Bank, Bahamas, Biscayne Bay, Florida, USA) relation separate major hurricane (category 4 5). We tested whether sharks would evacuate shallow coastal habitats (and thus exit arrays) during hurricanes exhibit comparable size spaces pre- post-storms, as has been previously found for smaller (50–150 length) elsewhere. Located northwest edge Little an array consisting 32 receivers tracking tiger Galeocerdo cuvier sustained a direct hit from Hurricane Matthew 2016. Daily detections tagged within were consistent before hurricane. Immediately following storm, daily approximately doubled. Size extent space post-storm. off Miami, bull Carcharhinus leucas, nurse Ginglymostoma cirratum, great hammerhead Sphyrna mokarran was exposed tropical-storm-force winds Irma 2017. As eye passed 140 km west, most present no longer detected, while remained at near Miami. Numbers declined Irma, whereas other did not. Ecological change point analyses indicated that seasonal changes - rather than conditions cannot ruled out primary driver post-storm behavior. Unlike which have water storms, variable responses events.

Biological responses of sharks to ocean acidification.

Sharks play a key role in the structure of marine food webs, but are facing major threats due to overfishing and habitat degradation. Although sharks are also assumed to be at relatively high risk from climate change due to a low intrinsic rate of population growth and slow rates of evolution, ocean acidification (OA) has not, until recently, been considered a direct threat. New studies have be...

Physiological and morphological responses of rice (Oryza sativa L.) to varying water stress management strategies

Sustainability of rice production under limited water conditions is threatened by increasing irrigation water scarcity. Therefore, physiological and morphological responses of rice to varying water stress management strategies should be determined. The physiological and morphological responses of a semi dwarf rice (Hashemi cultivar) to water stress intensities (mild and severe, i.e., short-dura...

Behavioral Responses to Natural Disasters

Catastrophic events can dramatically alter existing social and economic relationships. The consequences can be long-lasting and give rise to heterogeneity of behavior across populations. We investigate the impact of a large negative shock on altruism, trust and reciprocity in 30 small Honduran communities diversely affected by Hurricane Mitch in 1998. We conduct a survey of communities and beha...

CARDIOVASCULAR RESPONSES TO HYPERCAPNIA AND VARYING LEVELS OF ARTERIAL pH IN THE ANESTHETIZED CAT

Effects of acute hypercapnia on the cardiovascular system (CYS) were studied in the anesthetized cat. After surgery the animal was exposed to a gas mixture of 12% CO2 and 25% O2 in nitrogen, and hypercapnia with low levels of arterial pH (pHa) was produced for 20 minutes. In the second run the same level of hypercapnia was induced by ventilating the same cat from the above gas mixture but ...

Erhualian and Pietrain pigs exhibit distinct behavioral, endocrine and biochemical responses during transport

This study describes the breed-specific coping characteristics of pigs in response to transport stress. The dynamic changes of behavior, the activities of creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), as well as the plasma concentrations of stress and metabolic hormones in Erhualian (EHL) and Pietrain (PIE) pigs during 2 h transport were investigated. The majority of the behavior of EHL...
